Abstract

Do Windows updates drive you crazy? Does OSX keep you waiting with a black screen again? Recompiling your Linux kernel right now?

Might as well spend some time rolling your own toy OS, right?

So let's dive into the funsies of the BIOS, Interrupts, ye ole' Assembler and C and fire up something that responds to our calls...

You'll see the many pains one has to go thru, the many decisions to make along the way and the huge fun it is!

Ah, the good old times playing with low level C and x86 assembly.
I can already feel the smell of segfaults and misconfigured hardware registers.
Oh, how I miss the taste of code that only runs on a specific machine during a blue moon.

BRING IT ON!

+ Martin Naumann, That's awesome! No frameworks, please! Getting how it all works (or at least how it all started to work before we introduced near-magical technologies nowadays) is, IMO, fundamental if you're going to deal with security and performance on the low-level side of things

Sounds promising, but besides being a great thing to brag about, when does it really start paying up to have an entire OS created from scratch? When does it really become critical? Most people will first start looking for Arduino or RaspberryPi based solutions, mostly because the "hard work" is already done...
