Abstract

Meteor, a new web development framework that aims to make it easier to build web apps, has been driving hype all over the Internet. And while it has recently received $11.2 million dollars in funding, many aren't even aware of what it is and what it's for.

In this talk, I propose to explain the fuss about Meteor. I'll talk about what you should use it for, what you shouldn't use it for, how it compares with other web app frameworks, as well as guiding you through a simple example app so you can easily acknowledge Meteor's power.

Seems cool. I've heard of meteor before and it sounded cool at the time, but I haven't seen a lot of resources out there so it sounds like a nice talk to attend.

i think there was a meteor talk last year, was built on top of node.js afaicr, seemed pretty cool, never made anything with it yet though. hope this talk can convince me again to try it out on a real project.

I remember looking into meteor sometime ago (a year, maybe more) and if I recall correctly I didn't like it because in the demo video they said that you could write to the server database directly via the browser's javascript console (which feels like a realy bad idea),

How's that on the current version? Is it safer? Is there any way to block that kind of behaviour?

+ João David Costa, While it is possible to do that, it is not the only way of doing it. You can (and should) have a client/ and server/ folder and Meteor will auto-detect them (as well as lib/ and others) and run the code accordingly. Then you can change the permission of the server/ folder as you wish and have no fear of the user changing the server-side code.

How can we prevent sqli at Meteor?
Are there good security practices for Meteor applications?

+ David Gomes, you should be prepared for these questions because they're recurrent questions about Meteor.

btw, http://docs.mongodb.org/manual/faq/developers/#how-does-mongodb-address-sql-or-query-injection it could be a start.

Looks like an interesting talk. When I first heard about meteor, I thought of it as a productive framework, but never really took a closer look into it. Hope this talk does it for me.
Mr. David, could you please update the description to tell us what would the example application be about/what would it do?

I can tell you I haven't yet decided, but I'm thinking of something more graphical that the audience can all run together with me.

I've been playing around with meteor and really liked it but it's not meant to be used for everything.
I'm curious about what you have to say on the fuzz and the usage contexts.
